Extract from report to the Lt.-Gov. of NB by M.H. Perley, Commissioner for Indian Affair furnishing "a full statement of all the Micmacs in New Brunswick, amounting to 935 souls, to which there has been added the Malecites amounting…to 1377 souls. The Micmacs frequenting Eel River and Dalhousie are not included.. they being enumerated among the Micmacs of Canada." The report calls "loudly for the interference of the Government on behalf of this unfortunate people" and gives general remarks with "respect to the best means of ameliorating their condition," also, religion, land, "civilization," schooling, Indian Settlements, and a brief tallying by age and gender.
