A petition of Gabriel Anthony, "elected Chief of the Indians in the western part of this province…praying a grant of money to relieve the wants of the Indians within his jurisdiction and to defray his personal expenses incurred in travelling amongst them in discharge of his duties as Chief."

Resolved that a Committee be appointed on Indian Affairs.

Ordered that Mr. Howe, Mr. Doyle, Mr. Uniacke, Mr. Whitman, and Mr. Spearwater be a Committee for that purpose and that the petition of Gabriel Anthony be referred to them.

Appendix no. 18
Report of the "condition of the Micmac population in this Island" [i.e. Cape Breton] by Edmond Dodd and H. W Crawley. Reports that agricultural improvements continue to increase, mostly due to the annual diminution of their hunting grounds, and educational progress made. Requests appropriation a piece of land at Fresh Water Creek and a reserve on the Mira Road.

Appendix no. 56
Report of the Committee to whom was referred the documents connected with Indian Affairs. Summaries grants, noting CB as "furnishing the strongest evidence of the utility of moderate grants." They "would recommend the appointment of a similar Commission, by whom the expenditure in the western counties of NS should be conducted on some regular system…" and note that the "Indians of the county of Shelburne have hitherto participated but slightly in the expenditure…" Also, the Committee "strongly approve the recommendation of the Commissioners for Cape Breton - that land be reserved at Freshwater Creek and on the Mira Road."
