I have been at a loss what to do as the winter is so far advanced, the Coasters will be closed in at Shelburne by Ice and the Corn would be in Halifax until spring at the mercy of the rats &c. &c. at length concluded to procure an order on Jno. Clark of Halifax for £ 9.0.0. which you will find enclosed, and trust will meet your approbation." Holograph.

1178. Nathaniel White to his brother Cornelius, chiefly on public matters. ''The Shubenacadie Canal is the humbug of the day, and in spite of the lesson which the late London bubble bursting should have taught, high & humble rich & righteous are all infected with this waterway mania. Further somewhat obscure references to members of the House and the canal project. But to step down from my stilts & deal a little in dry facts. £17 000 have been already subscribed in town & £15 000 granted by the legislature to cut this canal through a country, on whose surface not enough is grown to give a wholesome meal to a grasshopper, not a tree large enough to give shelter to a caribboo, a country most happily described by Judge Wiswall when he styled it his Satanic Majesty's playground where Beelzebub & Rhademanthus amuse themselves occasionally at a game of marbles. What can have poisoned the intellects of this steady-going people unless it be the French-wines that our glorious free trade has deluged the market with my poor bread & water wits cannot discover. Holograph.

1179. Nathaniel White to his brother Cornelius, in receipt of letters. ''I had sounded Jeffrey, with whom I am on good terms, but he says that they have made a cypher of him & that the appointments all come from the Treasury. The cause of Shelburne being left unprovided with a Collector was the dismal picture of it which Bruce drew when he applied Home for preferment. Mr. Crowell had been speaking to Jeffry & asking the situation for Col. Buskirk. Jeffrey shewed me a letter from Mr. Wodehouse the Commissr. who is now in the U. S. to whom he had written on the subject. In that he says he has no power to appoint any one with a promise of a salary but advises Jeffrey to give a temporary appointment, trusting to a statement to the Treasury at the end of the year for compensation & thus gaining a sort of hold under the hope of being confirmed. This however has too much of the diplomatic phinesse about it. I think the best way is to forward a Petition & get it recommended by the Governor & Collector & transmitted to the Treasy. Board. I will see Mr. Crowell & Ascertain his views, intentions & -  Holograph.

1180. Nathaniel White to his brother Cornelius. ''I have been most cordially welcomed & congratulated by all for whom I care a fig & have busied myself in contradicting the misstatements which Barry has been propagating. I find however that little credit was given to them, particularly with regard to our friend Campbell. All now give him much credit for his manly conduct and applaud him for the prompt resentment which he shewed. I am afraid I shall not have time to write him as Snow starts in the morning, but say to him that Barry strutted about town a day or two with his tattered coat until he found himself a laughing stock instead of an object of sympathy and is now content to put by his trophy & attend to his shop.'' Postscript. ''Barry has publicly expressed his satisfaction with your conduct & lauded you to the skies. You can easily see through this. Charles Achibald is in for Truro by a majority of 3 & has gone through a tough scrutiny.'' Holograph.
