1159. Nathaniel White to his brother Cornelius. How goes on the scrutiny? Many stories are in circulation here propogated by Barrys faction all so palpably & grossly untrue that I have exerted myself in stopping their currency. None of them however interfering with my fame but all directed against the magistracy & gentility of Shelburne. ''Church & state are both suffering under the venom of their treacherous tongue - 'Tis now quite plain to me that Barry has been urged on by the canting crew to make this determined stand & that radicalism in religion & policitcks...mutually beget each other.'' Holograph.

1825  7 Mar  Halifax

1166. Nathaniel White to his brother Cornelius. Reminiscences. Comments on United States politics. "our parliament are yet engaged in clearing away the rubbish & have therefore not become interesting. Barry has wisely withdrawn from the bustle of a contested election & given up to the sitting member. You would be confounded at the change since S.G.W.A. {Archibald] took the chair. His visit to our aristocratical parent has filled him with the flourish & humbug of pomp & he now appears to the astonished lookers-on in the robes & full bottomed wig of State. He & Franklin who is similarly attired cut, I assure you, quite a respectable figure. This is all right & has the effect of awing the loquacious members into becoming silence. Those only who have had a peep under the wig have the courage to stand up & address such a majestic figure."  Holograph.

1825  7 May  Halifax

1168. Nathaniel White to his brother Cornelius. ''I have screwed myself up to the conduct you advised me to adopt towards my quondam foe & have succeeded admirably. I find him perfectly placable & disposed to forget all stale grievances. He dines with me today & will I think be inclined to give me a lift on any future occasion. You have of course heard of the great change that has taken place in the views of the Governt at home, with regard to the Colonies & of the effect it has had on the giddy brains of our citizens. There is no doubt but the liberal system about to be pursued will ultimately prove very beneficial to this colony, but to anticipate any immediate effect is the height of folly. The good people here are all agog on the subject & appear to think that by some mighty magic the late measure will at once scatter the cloud that hangs over us or rather that instead of expending itself in refreshing showers which will gradually fertilize & enrich, it will distil dollars & doubloons at once upon us. Holograph.
