"Down with Confederation! Forward to Repeal and Liberty!"

Letter to the electors of Lunenburg County. Although Charles Edward Church lost the federal election of 1878, he ran successfully in the provincial election of 1882. Four years later, Church and George Angus Ross ran for the Liberal party in Lunenburg County. Both candidates won the provincial election held on 15 June 1886. As their broadsheet proudly proclaimed, the Liberals ran on the secessionist ticket, advocating the repeal of Confederation.
