''Vote for Kaulbach. Don't Vote for Church"

19th Century politics could be downright vicious with considerable slander. This political broadsheet asked the Lunenburg County electorate to vote for Charles Edwin Kaulbach, the Conservative candidate in the federal election to be held on 17 September 1878. Kaulbach called his opponent, Charles Edward Church,- the sitting Liberal-"two-faced, shuffling and treacherous." The Halifax newspaper (Daily Acadian Recorder 11 September 1878) was equally vicious, commenting that Kaulbach rule had done little good for the people of Lunenburg: "like Protection, it has made the family rich; but like Protection, it has also made the people poor, kept their noses to the grindstone and themselves hopelessly in debt."
