Captain Campbell Hardy's companion sketches "Goldwashing near Lunenburg" and "View of Lunenburg from Battery Point" appeared in The Illustrated London News, 5 October 1861. Nova Scotia was experiencing a small gold rush and Captain Hardy reported that "Every day fresh discoveries of auriferous districts are being made in this province…" He also noted that "Lunenburg was a 'pretty little village'" and then gave a description of The Ovens (page 352).
