This typical example of the 'Lunenburg House', built by Nicholas Berringer sometime after 1876, was purchased by Augustus Wolff, commission and insurance agent, in 1881. He was the first mayor of Lunenburg in 1889 and again in 1895 and 1910. The lack of symmetry between the ground and upper floor may date from its construction or from alterations to the building when it became the Telephone Office. It is shown as the Telephone Office on both C.E.Good's Lunenburg Fire Insurance Plan for 1884 and the Revised Plan of 1897.
