Draft of report of the committee of the House on the militia laws, recommending a committee to wait on the Lt.-Governor and ask him to communicate "what executive measures he has in contemplation, for the improvement of the Militia, in which he will require the aid of the Legislature."

25 May 1808

Memorial of George Wright, master of the Halifax Grammar School, describing the conditions upon which he accepted the position, and stating that up to this year he has received annually the full salaries provided by the law for establishing the school, but "That the said Salaries not being included in the Estimate and Appropriation Act of the present year, cannot, on that account, be paid quarterly in the usual course of the other Provincial Salaries, but must remain unpaid, until all the Services actually provided for in the Appropriation Act are first discharged; and the Salary established for the support of the Public School must depend for payment on the surplusage of the unappropriated Revenue, which will be a great hardship to your Memorialist." Therefore asks that school salaries be borne on the annual estimate. Signed.

Draft of Mr. Lawson’s motion for a committee to request the Lt.-Governor for an account from the Treasurer of the expenditure of £500 granted for purchasing furniture for the new Government House "together with a list of such Articles as have been purchased therewith."

Draft of resolution to accompany grant for one year for Sir John Wentworth. First draft: "Resolved that in compliance with his Majesty’s gracious Recommendation a Sum of Money be granted to Sir John Wentworth for one year – Resolved that a humble address to presented to his Excellency the Lt.-Governor stating that from a dutiful Respect to his Majestys royal Recommendation the House have made the foregoing Provision for Sir Jno. Wentworth, but in faithfulness to their Constituents they desire to decline making a permanent establishment until they have taken their Sence on the Subject." Second draft the same until the word "Provision", after which "but they desire to defer making a more permanent establishment for further consideration." Draft of answer of the House to message from the Council regarding the vote for an allowance for Sir John Wentworth. "The House of Assembly do not conceive that H.M. Council had any intention, in their message of yesterday to prescribe the mode which the House should adopt for carrying into effect the object recommended to the House of Assembly by his Majesty. If, therefore H.M. Council will not assent to the Resolve now before them but return it not agreed to, it is probable the House will take the Subject into further consideration."

Reply of Council to the resolve of the House for granting an allowance of £500 for one year to Sir John Wentworth. The suggest "that unless the Grant should be made by a Bill and during the natural life of Sir John Wentworth, it might instead of promoting eventually tend to defeat the object recommended by His Majesty."

28 May 1808

Mr. Robie’s motion regarding the written paper sent down on the 27th May regarding the Assembly’s vote to Sir John Wentworth. "Resolved that a Committee be appointed to wait upon His Majesty’s Council and humbly to inform their Honours that this House confesses its ignorance of the proper Mode of settling an Annuity upon Sir J Wentworth that the House thanks His Majesty’s Council for the Lesson sent yesterday – And that the House profiting thereby has immediately passed a Bill for the purpose and in the manner ordered by H Majesty, Council." The above was apparently expunged from the Journal, and the report of the committee substituted.
