Petition of Evan MacPhee and other "of his Majestie’s loyal Subjects Inhabitants of Nine Mile River in Douglass"; they state that "when they were discharged from the (84th) Regt. they were settled in the Interior part of the Country, that they had neither roads nor water carriage that they underwent very Great difficulties before thay had any roads of Horses & were forced for Several Years to carry Seed and Provision on there backs through the woods with onely the help of blased trees. That through the assistance of Almighty dog, the aid of Government and their own very Great Exertions their roads are opened and a small part plowed and throwed up; that owing to the badness of near four miles of their road between the Covagate road and their settlement, they are forced to go to market on Horseback; and by that means cannot get their meat, and other articles to Town in near so good order for market, nor will a Small load on horse back much (more) than defray the Expences."
