24 December 1807

Petition of Ebenezer Crosby asking compensation for taking care of two transient paupers in the winter of 1801. "a Brig bound from Halifax to St. Johns New Brunswick, unfortunately caught Fire in the Bay of Fundy and the Crew consisting of Twenty-two persons, all perished except five who after subsisting eight days in the Boat on the remains of their dead Companions were landed at Yarmouth" where the petitioner lives. One of the two who were taken to his house died, the other lived, after much care had been taken to save his life. Petitioner is a poor man, and, despairing of receiving compensation otherwise (having applied to the overseers of the poor and attended every town meeting since), he applied to the legislature.
