331. Charles Whitworth to Nathan Jones. He sends this letter by Mr. Furlong, who goes to find out whether he can obtain a cargo of lumber from Jones for a ship which George Parker consigned to Whitworth. If Jones has the lumber the ship will carry some of its English cargo, by way of payment, to Frenchman's Bay; he sends an inventory so that Jones may choose, also a few of his handbills in case they may contain some things Jones wants.  Holograph.

332. Nathan Jones to Charles Whitworth. Being away from home he missed loading the Nancy on her arrival from Shelburne. "If you Shou'd have any Ships that wants Cargoes of Boards, Masts, Squair Timber, or Sparrs, I wou'd be glad to supply them & on as Reasonable Terms as any body, but wou'd Wish to have Thirty or Forty days Notice so that there may not be any Detention. For payment I woud take Goods, as I am in want of Five of Six Hundred Pounds worth at this time if I cou'd come at them in my way, and I shou'd be glad to hear from you at every Oportunity that we may Renew our former Acquaintance." Holograph.

335. Nathaniel Whitworth to his brother Charles, on arriving from England.  Encloses letter from England re business and directions. "..pray be cautious in your remittance, indeed at present I see no mode except Cash, and even in that I'm fearful you will be a loser except in Guineas, and you must be particularly attentive, that they weigh five pennyweight, eight Grains, or of course they must be sold as Bullion, nothing but Guineas (in Gold) will answer, Our friends in their favor of 27th Oct. say "Oil keeps up we mean White Sperm. Cali. Potash droops on account of the late imports being vended by Public Sale, fine Pearl ash is in demand; so that God knows my dear Charles how you will be able to satisfy the Cries of your Creditors, it must be by Cash and Bills only, & that permit me to recommend as speedy as possible, as your Credit is now expired & Interest commenc'd.." 341. Charles Whitworth to Messrs. Champion & Dickason, in receipt of letters and goods. Directions re goods. He has ordered £300 to be remitted to them in each, since it is impossible to secure bills of exchange in Halifax. "The Gunpowder shipt to me is horrid Bad it will scarcely take fire, every body that has had of it complains very much, there was likewise fifty doz. of wood Knives shipt for Clasp Knives I have offerd them as Presents to the I[n]deans and they have absolutely Laught at them, in short they are not deserving the Name of a Knife." 342. Thomas Sheaffe to Chas. Whitworth, relative to business which he thinks may be of mutual benefit.  Sheaffe and partner are now in the shipchandlery line but mean to leave it and go into the W. India and Commission line. Annexes list of articles from which Whitworth may wish to choose to have them send him a package. Holograph.

343. Chas. Whitworth to George Parker. The cargo of the Nancy has not found the ready sale he anticipated. Butter has done very well at from 9d. To 1 / per pound, brick very well, hardware and dry goods very slow because of the large quantities on sale. Due to the dryness of the season there was no water for the lumber mills and the Nancy has been detained at Penobscot waiting for her load of lumber. Bad conduct of Mr. Jones of Frenchman's Bay re lumber. Holograph.
