Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022

Royal Visit 1976

For three days in mid-July 1976, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited Halifax and Dartmouth, flew to Greenwood, and from there toured Kentville, Wolfville and Windsor. They attended the Olympic Folk Show at St. Mary's University Stadium in Halifax, where they viewed the works of Joe Deveau and other Acadian folk artists. The Royal Couple were then entertained by choristers, musicians, pipe bands, brass bands, Highland dancers and fiddlers. French, English and Gaelic folk songs were featured, presented by massed choirs from Bridgetown, Middleton, New Glasgow, Halifax, Dartmouth and other Nova Scotia communities.

Performing groups included the Cape Breton Fiddlers, Highland Dancers of Nova Scotia, Ceildhu Dancers, Halifax Schools Jazz and Ukelele Bands, the Black Symposium, Cobequid High School Symphony Band, Dartmouth Boy's Pipe Band, Antigonish Legion Pipe Band, Whylde Thyme Pipe Band, and the Scotia Singers, who presented songs from the collection of noted folklorist Helen Creighton.
