What's Cooking?

Food, Drink and the Pleasures of Eating in Old-Time Nova Scotia

Virtual Exhibit

An endless variety of food, drink and the pleasures of eating is captured here in over 100 images and documents — a smorgasbord of kitchens and cooking equipment, banquets indoors and out, picnics, church suppers and weddings, restaurants, old-time purveyors of meat and game, grocery stores and early supermarkets, camp kitchens, farm produce and the harvest of the sea. The exhibit begins with a diagram showing the correct placement of food on the table at a formal banquet in Halifax, 1785, and ends two centuries later in 1994, with HM Queen Elizabeth II inspecting a period kitchen rebuilt at Fortress Louisbourg.
