The first Roman Catholic chapel was built in Arichat in 1786. Father Jean Baptist Maranda arrived in the parish in 1835 and a new church was then built. Our Lady of L'Assumption Church was formally opened on 15 October 1837. The Geological Survey Map, 1884, identifies the Church of England, Roman Catholic Church, Convent, Court House, Hotel, Telegraph Office and Post Office in Arichat.
