Arichat is the county seat for Richmond County which was created in 1835. Alexander MacDonald, a master carpenter of Antigonish, was awarded the contract to build a Court House in Arichat. Richmond County Court House was completed in December 1847. The building has classical elements such as projecting portico with columns and four oversize rectangular windows. The Geological Survey Map, 1884, identifies the Church of England, Roman Catholic Church, Convent, Court House, Hotel, Telegraph Office and Post Office in Arichat
