Memorial of Edward Mortimer and others, "That a number of the Inhabitants of the District of Pictou, desirous of extending the System of Education of those higher branches of literature which are not taught in the Provincial Grammar Schools, sometime ago formed themselves into a society for that purpose, under the annexed regulations; That subscriptions were accordingly opened and from the liberal patronage of the Public, they conceive themselves enabled to proceed to a partial execution of their design, but from their legal inability to Hold such property as has already been, or may in future be entrusted to them for the purpose above mentioned, and also to make such arrangements and regulations as an establishment of this nature must unavoidable require, they are exposed to difficultys which tend to impede their intentions – For these reasons they have directed your Petitions as a Committee, to lay their situation before this Honourable House, trusting that from Your former enlightened and Patriotic exertions for the advancement of literature you will be disposed to obviate those difficultys which impeded its progress – In behalf of said society, therefore, we humbly request that this Honorable House will take our case into consideration and grant such relief as you in your wisdom shall judge most beneficial for the interests of learning, and your Memorialists as in duty bound will ever Pray."
