13 February 1865

Petition, Mary Hughes, Halifax, asking for the release of her husband and father of five children, Thomas, blacksmith. Charged and sentenced for theft. His main problem was alcohol. Now he 'has taken the plade.'

Petition, Phoebe Ann Parker, widow, Halifax, asking for the pardon of Louisa Parker, sentenced to twelve months for child murder. Judge notes that Louisa (a black woman) tried to conceal the birth and death of the child.

Petition of James Blight, for Empire Coal Co., Amherst, saying that the Crown has been surveying land which belongs to the Company. Map showing roads and property lines included.

Telegraph from Alexander McDonnell complaining of the 11 hour a day work shift on the St. Peter's Canal.

Petition from Marshall Bourinot, Sydney, seeking a license to work certain area for coal in the Cow Bay/Glace Bay area. Detailed map is attached. There is some concern expressed by Department of Mines that a bad precedent might be set if the petition is approved.

Petition, clerks in Provincial Service, asking that hours of work on Saturday be reduced to half a day.

Petition of Ellen Murphy, Sheet Harbour, asking for the pardon of her son, Matthew, sentenced for helping a sailor to desert.

Petition, Elizabeth Boutilier, jailed for attempted larceny. States that if she is released she will leave the province (released).

Letter from M.H. Richey, Mayor, concerning petition of Julia Duncan. Asks that if she is released that a fine and relocation be imposed. She was sentenced for running a disorderly house. Has three children and no husband (released).

26 September 1865

Letter asking for pardon of Charles Pulford, member of the crew of the 'Duncan,' jailed for 'assault upon a young woman of a character which richly merited the punishment awarded.' Also letter from ship mates and the warden supporting Pulford.

Letter from James Herkes, Halifax, asking for the release of his brother George, who he had requested to be imprisoned as a form of discipline. Mayor asks for release but only if George finds employment (granted).
