The Royal Engineers in Halifax

York Redoubt

Piers note: No. 289. York Redoubt: Main Magazine, its Northwest front; showing the two Entrances, stone-revetted Ditch at front and leading, in the foreground, into the Stockaded Passage to the South Gate of the Redoubt; bits of the Stockade to left and right; above the ditch is a transverse Screen of boards, the purpose of which is not clear. About 1881. Looking South. Above, about the centre of the Magazine, to left, is ventilator [?] with tall lightning-rod. In foreground is the end of the connection with the Redoubt. The top of the screen is seen (small) in left of No. 253, of about year 1880. It is noted that in 18(?) the "Expense Magazine" at York Redoubt was drained and cured of dampness. It is possible the ditch may be connected with that. Compare with general view of the Magazine in 1870 (No. 12).

Date.: ca. 1881
