The Royal Engineers in Halifax

Piers note: No. 288. York Redoubt: Caponier, (of ironstone, loopholed, about 10½ feet height) which enfilades or flanks the rough ditch of East Front, between embrasure of number 7 and 8 guns; with ironstone Escarp (probably about 15 feet high), and Parapet with embrasures for numbers 7 and 8 of the 9-inch R.M.L. Guns; the loopholed brick parapet and look-out house of Duke of York's Tower is seen just over the main Casemate (No. 92). About 1881. Looking Northwest from a point about 70 feet east of the escarp and about 90 feet Southeast of the caponier. This is precisely the same as the view of 1873 (No. 91), but there is now no vestige left of the old constructional cable trolley of some 8 years before. 7 loopholes are in the South side of Caponier, 3 being in the right face of the salient, and 4 in the flank.
