'An East Coast Port': Halifax in Wartime, 1939-1945

Kay's Department Store, Barrington Street

V-E Day Riots. The Halifax Chronicle, Thursday, May 10, 1945, p.13, included a photograph of Kay’s Limited and people with clothing outside the store. The caption read “Loads of clothing from Kay’s Limited. Only the Model Survives.” Even the model (in the window directly below the word “Credit”) vanished shortly thereafter because it is not in this photograph. Perhaps the dress model reported by The Halifax Mail, 9 May 1945, p. 6, as being found in Wallace Brothers shoe store after being "dragged from another store" came from Kay's Limited.

Date: 8 May 1945
