"Matheson Homestead, Alex. K. Matheson, Craigen, Near Malagawatch"

The Matheson House displays Gothic Revival elements with three pointed windows in the front gable and pointed windows in the front door's sidelights. However, the house also has Classical elements such as a fanlight in the transom.

Gothic Revival buildings, 1840-1890, include the following characteristics:

- wood often board and batten, brick or stone
- 1 ½ to 2 ½ storeys with an ell or "L" shaped
- steeply pitched gable roof, with gingerbread carving or trim on the eaves
- wall dormers
- chimney at peak, decorative chimney pots
- centered or off-centre doorway, and symmetrical facade
