Gothic Revival buildings, 1840-1890, include the following characteristics:
- wood often board and batten, brick or stone
- 1 ½ to 2 ½ storeys with an ell or "L" shaped
- steeply pitched gable roof, with gingerbread carving or trim on the eaves
- wall dormers
- chimney at peak, decorative chimney pots
- centered or off-centre doorway, and symmetrical facade
