Biography / Genealogy Index Cards

The Biography / Genealogy Card Catalogue at the Nova Scotia Archives contains approximately 100,000 indexed cards in numbered drawers, in overall A-Z sequence, with each drawer also arranged internally in alphabetical order.

This catalogue is often the best starting point for any genealogical or biographical research project, because it identifies many (but definitely not all) sources of information about specific individuals or families to be found deep in the archival holdings, plus countless references to newspaper items, published sources, and typescripts or handwritten records.

The catalogue is not complete and has not been added to in recent years, but it holds many obscure references not captured elsewhere, and it’s just possible that the information you’re seeking has already been researched and compiled by someone else who subsequently donated their work. If this is the case, your own research will be greatly enhanced.

The card catalogue is located at the Nova Scotia Archives. See Hours and Location to plan a visit.
