Correspondence concerning Mr. Robertson, of the Customs Department, who is accused of having drunk a toast to George Washington. Robertson denies that any such event happened at Pictou.

Petition of Thomas Smith, St. Margaret's Bay, fisherman who committed larceny while drunk. George Boutillier agrees to employ Smith. Mayor Pryor agrees to release if Smith will stay out of Halifax for six months (pardoned).

8 May 1850

Petition of Edward Noiles, Nappan River, reporting that due to famine many in the area have had to turn to fishing shad at the mouth of the Nappan and Maccan Rivers. Local fisherman have attempted to drive them away. Asks some part of the fishing grounds be set aside for them.

Petition of William Skinner, Halifax, who came to Nova Scotia from Britain in 1817. Has lost the papers which proved he was entitled to land in Canada. Now asks for land in Nova Scotia. A tailor by trade.

Petition of Charles R. Pearson, proprietor of the 'principal Hotel in Truro,' asking for a licence to sell liquor.

Inhabitants of Onslow complaining about the delivery of mail on Sunday (29 signatures).

Petition of John W. and David S. Fairbanks, fish merchants, Arichat, complaining that the inspector was so slow in coming to inspect their fish that the catch was in danger of spoiling. John F. Fuller, inspector, replies that he was prompt in his service. Claims that the fish were improperly packed.

John Hill, Wallace, Controller of Customs, asks for a leave of absence to visit his native country, England, and recommends Stephen Fulton as his replacement.

David Whelan, Sydney, in jail for not paying rent. Says that his family of seven was starving and that he could not raise the money.

Petition of Thomas Brown, cooper, Port Medway, complaining of actions of Philip Carten, J.P. James Mitchell, constable, Mille Village says some of the suits are false (lengthy series of correspondence attached).

Petition of residents of Pope's Harbour, Spry Harbour and adjacent harbours complaining about a petition presented by Edward Middleman, J.P. Most of the 200 signatures were children (signed by 270 names).
