Some of his maxims, I agree with you, are very useful and worthy of imitation, but as a whole, I can't think that you would be willing I should practise what he inculcates. 954. Miles White to his father, Gideon, chiefly relative to setting up business in Halifax. He hopes for his Father's consent to the venture and thinks he will be able to secure the necessary credit without his guarantee. …"you view my dear Father the dark side, things do not wear so gloomy an aspect as you suppose - the great discount you speak of, as depressing the merchant is very true - but who confined to? To those that made their engagement before that fall that disposed of their goods not calculating that loss, and who purchased their goods at par, and paid for them, and now receiving their remittances from the country and along shore merchants dealing in Timber - in bills loosing thereby 15p Cent - but all that in the new beginner in a clear profit - and Merchandise likewise much cheaper than a twelve month since in England, tho' the complaint is so prevalent two or three young Men has gone home for goods and have taken stores, we have reports of this day that none of the colonys can receive any American produce, unless paid for in Merchandize or the production of our soil. that will alleviate the want of a circulating medium, even now little or no plaster is ship'd from Windsor except for Cash and it is said so many vessels are engaged in the Trade, that many have to go off half laden not having sufficient labourers to get it from the quary notwithstanding people of every discription is engaged in it."
