The Royal Engineers in Halifax

"Maplewood", Northwest Arm, Halifax

Piers note: No. 394. Residences of Military People, etc.: "Maplewood" (no doubt), near Pine Hill, Northwest Arm, Halifax; elaborate, pitch-roofed 2½ storeyed wooden house with flat-roofed wing with "embattled" roof. Northeast front with main door and driveway. Looking West from driveway. This notable house was built by William Hare, merchant; who sold it to Mather B. Almon, banker; and it was finally sold to late Senator David McKeen, who rebuilt the house on a new plan. It was leased by General Sir Patrick McDougall, who was G.O.C. from 1878-83, and also to General Sir John Ross who was G.O.C. from.... Lord Aberdeen, Governor General of Canada, leased it one summer between 1894 and 1898. Photograph probably taken when Sir P. McDougall was there.
