Piers note: No. 392. Portraits of Military Officers: Portrait Group of Officer and his family, believed to be of Lt. General Sir William O'Grady Haly, K.C.B., General Officer Commanding at Halifax, in civilian costume, with his aide-de-camp (Captain R.H. O'Grady Haly) in uniform, and four ladies of his family; seated in fur-covered wicker chairs on lawn with large trees at a country-house. All seem to be one family: father, mother, son, and three daughters. The aide has grenade badge on collar and also on glengarry cap, apparently a single star on shoulder, and wears braided patrol jacket. Two of the young ladies have a small eight-rayed star on left breast. For period between 1870 and 1885 when this photograph may have been made, the Commanders in Chief were: 1861-73. Sir C. Hastings Doyle. It is not he. 1873-78. Lt. General Sir William O'Grady Haly, K.C.B., whose aide-de-camp was Captain R.H. O'Grady Haly, 84th foot. General O'Grady Haly died at Halifax 19 March 1878, and was buried 22 March. 1878-83. Sir Patrick D. McDougall. It is not he. 1883-.... Lt. General Lord Alexander G. Russell, C.B., whose aide was Lt. L.G. Russell, Rifle Brigade.
