The Prat Sisters: Free Spirits of the 1890s

"Portrait of Elizabeth Prat" (1789-1872), copied from an earlier portrait

Inscription on reverse: "Portrait of Elizabeth Prat. Copied from original (which was probably painted in England about 1830) by Annie Louisa Prat, Wolfville, N.S., 1883." Elizabeth was Annie's grandmother and the wife of Samuel Prat of Glastonbury. Her husband died in 1845. In 1846, Elizabeth and her four sons emigrated to Paradise, Nova Scotia, to join a fifth brother recently settled there. Two of the brothers, George and Samuel, went to Wolfville. Samuel, father of the Prat sisters, became the first station master at Wolfville for the Windsor and Annapolis Railway Company. Elizabeth Prat died of typhoid fever on September 27, 1872.
