Inscription on reverse: "Samuel Prat, from painting, by Annie L. Prat, Jan. 20th 1884." The original may have been painted ca. 1830. Samuel Prat was Annie's grandfather, a solicitor at Glastonbury, who married into a landowning family. However, he lost heavily by investing in extending the canal system to Glastonbury, just before the coming of the railway. His bankruptcy no doubt contributed to his death in 1845, at the age of 52.
Donated by the estate of Annie L. Prat, 1961.
