Library Holdings

Intended to complement and provide context for the archival holdings at Nova Scotia Archives, the Library includes many unique and rare titles and in its scope and content, covers all aspects of Nova Scotia history. Nearly 300 titles relate directly to the Mi'kmaq, and have been entered into a special Library Database created for the Mi'kmaq Holdings Resource Guide.

Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Collection of several items copied from PAC regarding a claim for land title: 1) A map of land in question located on Fairy Lake, Annapolis County, 31 Oct. 1864. 2) Certificates stating that the "Indian James Charles" has occupied and improved his land, Annapolis, 21 Oct. 1864. 3) Petition by James Charles to the Lieutenant Governor requesting confirmation of title of land, 2 Nov. 1864. 4) A written description of the land in question. 5) Recommendation that a lease be granted, 26 June 1867. 6) Letter from Robert Leslie to S.P. Fairbanks, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Halifax, asking that title be given to John Peter, for land which has been abandoned, Annapolis, 8 May 1866. Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Copy of letter from Donald McLean to S.P. Fairbanks, Commissioner of Crown lands regarding reply to Fairbanks' letter in which a complaint was laid against McLean for trespassing on Mi'kmaq land. Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Copy of a letter from William Faulkner to James B. Uniack, Commissioner of Crown Lands, regarding the report of an examination of the Mi'kmaq reserve at Middle Stewiacke into land titles and estimates of land value. Included is a list of occupants and value of land and a map detailing the various lots. Faulkner was unable to complete a land survey because the present owners of the land, who had bought the land from Mi'kmaq, were afraid a survey might determine that some of the land still belonged to the Mi'kmaq.
