"John Thomas Lane (known as 'Paddy' Lane, clerk of the Custom House) in Micmac Indian costume, and Dr. Frederick W. Morris, both of Halifax, standing by a table on which is a painting of the Indian-Cup or Pitcher-plant, the root of which was the chief ingredient of what was often spoken of as Paddy Lane's Small-pox cure, and which Dr. Morris was an advocate of." Lane, an Englishman, was elected medicine man of the Shubenacadie band.
