HALIFAX DISASTER HEROES
The London Canada says: The King has approved the posthumous award of the Albert Medal in gold to Lt.-Commander (Acting Commander) Tom Kenneth Triggs, R.N.; and of the Albert Medal to Able Seaman William Bocker, O.No.J5841, for heroism on the occasion of the Halifax disaster on December 6th last.
The captain of H.M.S. -, which was about a mile away, sent off a boat to see if anything could be done to prevent loss of life, and Commander Triggs volunteered. He was pulled in the ship's whaler towards the bows of the Imo, which was about 300 yards from the Mont Blanc, to pass a line from her to a tug when the explosion occurred. Of the seven people in the whaler only Able Seaman Bocker was rescued alive on the Dartmouth shore, whither he had swum. The remainder perished.
The Albert Medal has also been awarded to Leading Seaman Thomas N. Davis, O.No.J.18334, Dev., and Able Seaman Robert Stones, O.No.J.29998, Dev., for gallantry on the same occasion.
