'An East Coast Port': Halifax in Wartime, 1939-1945

Invitation to the Reception of the Victory Loan Torch and the Centenary Celebration of the City of Halifax

Hosted by City of Halifax and the Provincial Torch Committee of the Victory Loan 1941 Organization of Nova Scotia. The Halifax Chronicle, 19 June 1941, p.1, reported on the Torch of Victory at the Garrison Grounds on 18 July. Mayor W.E. Donovan, representing the City of Halifax, passed the great golden Torch to three veterans of World War I as the announcer recited Colonel John McCrae's In Flanders Fields -- "Take up our quarrel with the foe./ To you with failing hands we throw/The Torch. Be yours to hold it high."
