Residence of W.J. Murdoch, Sherbrooke, NS

Greenwood Cottage, the jewel in the crown of Historic Sherbrooke Village, has had a number of property owners as reflected by property transactions. John Cumminger a successful Sherbrooke merchant, is reputed to have been inspired by a villa he saw in France.

After he returned to Sherbrooke he built a replica in wood about 1872 and named it "Greenwood Cottage" because of the intricate Gingerbread cottage trim along the eves of the house. John Cumminger left the house to his wife, Sarah Cumminger in 1892.

Mrs. Cumminger sold the property to William J. Murdoch in 1901. Catherine Murdoch left the property to Grace Nickerson and Jean Densmore in 1941.
