Brigs and Barques: Images and Artworks from the Age of Sail

Gazelle

Barque Gazelle was built at River John, Pictou County, NS. She was 999 tons net and was the last square-rigged ship on the Pictou register. She was mostly in the South American trade and on one occasion her whole crew died of yellow fever in Santos, and a new crew had to be found to take her out. This picture was taken in 1901 or 1902 and shows the barque hauled out on Yorstan Bros. slip in Pictou. In 1903 she was sold to a Russian firm and passed off the Pictou register.

Date: ca.1901
