Postscript relative to the schoolmaster at Shelburne: ''I knew not the Man from Adam until he called on me before he went to Shelburne I then gave him my opinion fully as to the practicability of the Plan and the Issue has justified my predictions - I am sorry for it indeed - a House divided cannot stand, your exertions for the common good have been uncommonly exerted and I think has given you sufficient cause to be henceforward the private Man - you should Remember the Motto of Robinsons pamphlet after the Election. 'where fraud prevails &c I do not mean to say there is fraud in the present rulers of our deserted Village but substitute pride and then the fact is as clear as the sun at noon day - we are here on the large scale much as you are on the small - Dissention & Cabal is the order of the Day & I think the Demos rather gain ground." 790. S. S. Blowers, Chief Justice, to Gideon White, in receipt of letter. ''His Excellency is grieved that differences should prevail amongst you subversive of the general order and quiet of the County; and I wish most sincerely that an end could be put to them; and that each of you would strive to cultivate good humour and moderation in all publick business - So far as I have had opportunity to become acquainted with the sentiments of Mr. Hames, he discovers no disposition to live in contention with you or any others; but should he have concealed his bad temper from me and deserve the worst you may think of him; you have only to preserve moderation and integrity on your part to be effectually secured against any machinations whatever that ordinarily happen in society. Experience has convinced me that nothing short of a specific allegation of fault and proof of it, if denied, should ever be sustained to the injury of a publick officer.'' Holograph.

794. Chas. Hill to Gideon White, relative to filling the office of collector of impost and excise for Shelburne. ''As soon as I recd your letter mentioning the Death of poor Skinner I waited on the governor to revive the Claim of your friend Buskirk but he informed me that the Solicitor of the Treasury Board had wrote officialy to him stating that if any person in the colonies receivg half pay would accept of any place under Government their half pay would become immediatly forfeited - in which case he thought it would be injuring Mr. Buskirk & therefore had given that place to Mr. Hames - this may be all very true but I am inclined to think had the difficulty of the half pay been out of the question H-es would have got the place as I understand he has latly been recommended to Sir J - by some left handed connection in England.''
