Letter from Crawley, Surveyor General of Cape Breton, to Archibald regarding trespasses on Crown lands at Rocky Bay, Cape Breton and Mi'kmaq reserve encroachments.

I have not heard of any of them coming
forward to obtain the Lieut. Governor's
permission, as directed, nor do I know
that any [rent OR such?] has been fixed by His
Excellency. In answer to your inquiry
respecting their ability to pay your costs,
I should say that some of them, at
least, can do it, because they were
desirous of purchasing the Indian
land, had it been permitted; and
indeed, I should think they must
have acquired sufficient from the
timber plundered from the Indian
reserve, and from the neighboring
crown property, to pay your [?dues OR acct].
