observe one Indian Hut or Wigwam within the limits of my Grant: But I counted seven Huts or Log Houses all of which were said to be occupied by Indians [and] on the [McWhinnie] Grant. There appeared to be a good deal of cleared Land surrounding them. I observed a small [spot] of Potatoes which had been planted by the Indians upon my land near the line of [McWhinnie's] Grant, which I attributed to their ignorance of the true boundary and not done with any desire to establish a claim to any Lands contained in my Grant. The Lands so planted did not appear to have been cleared by human laborer, but the trees had been so nearly consumed by an accidental fire as to admit a crop of Potatoes. I think the whole quantity of Land cultivated in this manner by the Indians within the limits pointed out to me as the boundaries of my Grant did not exceed an Acre. I further beg leave to observe that I obtained this land soon after the Royal permission was obtained
