Carman wrote "Flower of the Rose" for Annie after she sent him a rose from the 'Acadia Villa' garden in October 1889. He wrote it under the pseudonym, "Louis Norman," in memory of his infant brother who died in 1865. Carman first published "Flower of the Rose" in The Independent in 1890. He had a hand-printed limited edition published in 1892, after Samuel Prat's death. Minnie or May Rosina made this presentation cover for "Flower of the Rose," in leather embossed with the design of a rose, at the Primrose Bindery.
