Library Holdings

Intended to complement and provide context for the archival holdings at Nova Scotia Archives, the Library includes many unique and rare titles and in its scope and content, covers all aspects of Nova Scotia history. Nearly 300 titles relate directly to the Mi'kmaq, and have been entered into a special Library Database created for the Mi'kmaq Holdings Resource Guide.

Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Copy of letter from John D. Pinkham to P. Morris requesting permission to buy land owned by Mi'kmaq "Joseph Elvin" located on "Long Island, Ohio." Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Copy of a letter from W. J. Morris to J. S. Morris, Commissioner of Crown Lands, reporting on his investigation into a dispute over land at Indian Point claimed by several people. (1836) — Nova Scotia Archives Library MG 15 volume 18 number 24

Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Copy of petition from 18 Mi'kmaq families of Pomquet to Lieutenant General Sir James Kempt requesting the return of land on which they have resided for a number of years. Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Copy of petition from 11 Mi'kmaq families to Sir J. Wentworth requesting the allocation of 200 acres per family plus tools and provisions, etc., in order that they may improve their condition of life since Eurpoean immigration. A note states that 100 acres was approved for each family by Wentworth, 1807. (1807) — Nova Scotia Archives Library MG 15 volume 18 number 26

Mi'kmaq Research Collection — This is a typewritten compliation of correspondence, 1838-1841, regarding the purchase of Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island, for the sole use of the Mi'kmaq. It inslude a petition to the Queen from the Chief of the Mi'kmaq requesting a grant og land which would enable them to settle in one spot and, therefore, be in a position to regain their previous health and social fabric which has been disrupted by the French and English inhabitants. Several letters follow, as well as excerpts from the Journal of Assembly, which attempt to determine whether Lennox Island is for sale by its owner and what a fair price for the Island would be. Ultimately, the House of Assembly declines to purchase the Island for the Mi'kmaq. (1838) — Nova Scotia Archives Library MG 15 volume 18 number 27

Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Circular from the Provincial Secretary's Office to the Clerk of the Peace, queens County, requesting every effort to obtain information which will result in an amelioration of the condition of the Mi'kmaq pursuant with a resolution of the Legislative Council. Mi'kmaq Research Collection — Report of a Committee on Bronley Petition, 4 Apr. 1819, which finds that two settlements of Mi'maq have been made, one at Shubenacadie and one at Gold River (near Chester) and that considerable improvements have been made at the latter, that a sum of money still remains from the vote of 1817, and that a small grant is recommended for aiding the petitioners who wish to improve the "lot" of the Mi'kmaq.
