Pictou 19th March 1807
Gentlemen
Your letter of date 23d [Jany?] last came to hand the 13 [In?] _ In conformity thereto have duly considered the quiries relative to the Indians who usualy resort to this district & herewith transmit as particular answers as from my own knowledge & information of others have been able to collect
1st You have annexed answer to this [equiry?]
2d Capt Paul a very old man, to whom they look up to at present it is uncertain who will succeed him as their chief
3d Jouph Purnall has made several attempts to settle by Planting Potatoes, Indian Corn Beans & _ Indeed the quarter part of the Indians who frequent this quarter have shown a disposition to settle by Planting a little as above in several parts of this district
An Indian from Mathews Vineyard named Samuel Oakum who has married into this Tribe is a tolerable Mechanic in several Branches, particularly Coopering & Rigging Vessels and is also a pretty good sailor
4th Gone_but many of them speak good English
5th The Priest at Arrowshot & Prince Edward Island to whom they go once a year for the purpose of [confessing?] & to obtain absolution;
6 That part of the Philadelphia Grant
denominated Cariboo Point which is a large Island lying in the Mouth & forms the Harbour of Cariboo The soil is good & produces plenty of salt grass, is convenient for Water Carriage No roads, contiguous to hunting Grounds, Plenty of Timber, Cut small [illegible]
