I have examined Mr. Mortimers return of the Pictou Indians and think it is very correct as to the heads of families who at present make that settlement their place of General resort __ but there are a few of them (which are checked with Red Ink) that properly belong to Antigonish and occasionally come there, but being much in debt, do not tarry long. and as it is the universal custom of Indians to assume different names in the different settlements they frequent, it is not an easy matter to ascertain the [identical?] person by a written return. but in order as far as possible to prevent imposition (would it not be well for the persons appointed by the Comm[issione]rs for the distribution of what articles are allowed by Government. ) to send each to the other a List of the names of the heads of families which belong properly to their respective districts. that they might act accordingly.
