out the wishes of Government I adopted the most effectual steps to do so -- I took the trouble to travel down to the Indian Mission in the Bras dor Lake on the 26th July last the anniversary of their titular Saint "St. Ann" when they would be congregated together -- in doing so my travelling expenses cost me upwards of 50/ and I was occupied six days in doing the needful -- I was induced to go to that trouble under the full conviction that Government would remunerate me -- altho retrenchment is the order of the day -- I little expected they required their servants to work without pay -- if it is the case there is no inducement for persons to go to any extra trouble to afford them information. None of the other Clerks of the Peace took the trouble I did, altho I invited them to join me there. Trusting you will enable me to receive some recompensation
I have the honour to be
Sir your Most Obe't Humble Ser't
