Mi'kmaq Holdings Resource Guide
Letter of R. James of Bridgetown to Joseph Howe regarding the report of Dr. Johnston on small pox among the Mi'kmaq of Bay Shore enclosing a resolution of a Special Session of the Magistrates held at Bridgetown in 1849, ordering Drs. Johnston and Cochran to attend the Mi'kmaq and prevent the spreading of small pox, and also orders Joseph Whitlock, who declined to act as Health Warden, to attend the said doctors and see that the aforementioned regulations are carried out.

Bridgetown 10th. June 1849
Sir,
I regret to have to report for the information of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, that in consequence of the Small Pox having attacked two Indians at Charles Cove in the Bay Shore, Granville recently arrived in that locality from Halifax; as [?well or will] be more fully particularized by the enclosed Report of Dr Johnston. I felt it my duty to assemble the Magistrates in Special Session, and have now the Honor to enclose Copy of the Minutes of that Meeting, which I respectfully trust will meet the approval of His Excellency.
Given the alarm felt by the Inhabitants generally, and the measures taken to prevent the disease spreading I am in hopes that the Scourge will be confined to those two Indians.
