Sir,
In reference to the Micmac Indians, under my charge, I have the honour to state, that during the past season I have such-ceedid in settling upwards of twenty families upon the lands reserved for the tribe. Two good barns and several houses have been completed, seed has been supplied, and small bounties given to the industrious. The settlements, especially that at the Shubenacadie, are improving and only for the failure of the potato and wheat crops, there would have been most encouraging success.
It was wisely proposed by yourself and I have adhered to the plan as par as possible, that to encourage this people to engage in agriculture would be the best mode of affording them permanent relief and for this object, the grant from the legislature appears to have been made; but I have found it impossible to avoid the application of [small][illegible] to the relief of sickness and other distress. And during the planting season I was compelled to supply food to twenty five families, at the Shubenacadie rather than have them abandon their new occupations.
