Mi'kmaq Holdings Resource Guide

Affidavit of Thomas Trotter and John Monro certifying that they did, in April of 1824, measure the improvements made by the Mi'kmaq in lands in Pomquet granted to Colin Campbell, H.H. Cogswell, and William Mcwhinnie and found said improvements to be 3 1/2 acres, more or less shown in the attached plan (map). On the same page is the recommendation of the Justices of the Peace for the area to allow the Mi'kmaq 150 acres instead of 100 acres for firewood.

Explanation of the figures
1st 5 acres all the old stumps disappeared excepting a few of the most durable and
these very much decayed. [?Has] been cleared a second time by Johnsto[ne] and the
young wood appears from the stumps to have been very close and nearly 20
years of age

2nd 15 acres must have been cleared nearly about the same time with [No - crossed out] No 1 " [11]
Eleven or twelve acres have been cut down a second time by Johnston[e] but not burnt and
the young wood is standing on the remainder [?It] is so [close] as to be hardly penetrable
and cannot be less than 20 years of age

3rd 14 ½ acres cleared apparently about the same time with the two former. the growth
of young wood has been kept down by cattle and the lot is in a good state for
pasture

4th 2 acres apparently cleared about 8 or 10 years ago

5th 4 ¼ acres apparently cut about 7 or 8 years ago bit [not - underlined] cleared of the brush and
part of the heavy timber

6th 1¼ apparently cleared about 5 or 6 years ago
7th 8 ¾ acres most of which appears to have been cleared about 4 or 5 years ago
8th 1 acre apparently cleared about 4 or 5 years ago.

9th [?16] acres some of which has been cleared nearly 20 and part not more than 2 years
ago What has been lately cleared has been done in a very complete state and
part of it is under a most promising crop of young grass

10th 2 acres an old clearing and partly grown up with young wood
11th 2 ½ acres very old and partly grown up with young wood

12th 2 acres apparently cleared about 10 or 11 years ago and said to have been partly
cleared by [Talbert] the Ferryman at Pomquet

13 partly cut down but not measured
