The Beaton Institute at Cape Breton University in Sydney, NS, is a community and university archives that specializes in the rich social, economic, cultural, religious, political, labour, industrial, environmental and rural history of Cape Breton Island.

The Institute holds a wealth of archival resources, including personal records, correspondence and diaries; business records, ledgers and workers' time-books; census records; church records; land grants; photographs; maps; audio files and video tapes. These archival resources are complemented by an extensive library of rare books, reference materials, newspapers, pamphlets and theses.

Many of the 60,000 photographs held in the Institute's collections document the rich mining heritage of Cape Breton Island. As a partner in the 'Men in the Mines' project, the Institute has provided a selection of these images for Web presentation. The photographs have been incorporated throughout the Website, but are also presented below in their entirety, to enable Internet visitors to view them as a distinct group.
