"The Drummond Colliery Disaster"

"The 'Blow' — From the Pumping Shaft — Death of Burns and Narrow Escape of Messrs. Hudson and Coxon." This image was published in the Canadian Illustrated News, 31 May 1873, p. 344. The explosion at the Westville mine in Pictou County on 13 May 1873, killed sixty men and boys. Debris was hurled great distances and the explosions and fire continued over several days.
