A History of Mining Activity in Nova Scotia, 1720-1992

"The Explosion at Campbell's Pit in the 'Square'." This image was published in the Canadian Illustrated News, 31 May 1873, p. 344. The explosion at the Westville mine in Pictou County on 13 May 1873, killed sixty men and boys. Debris was hurled great distances and the explosions and fire continued over several days.
